What is a firewall?  In simple terms a firewall is a system which prevents unauthorised use of, and access to, your PC.  There are several types of firewalls, but for the sake of simplicity, we are going to divide them into two groups.

• Server firewalls:  These are complicated scripts (why is it that people insist in complicating what could be very simple?) which sit in your Internet provider's computer.  You have no control whatsoever over them.  These firewalls are only as good as the people who maintain them. 
  
• Software firewalls:  These are software driven and live in your computer.  You install them just like any other software.  You will never know how they work (unless you are a rocket scientist) but you will have some control on what they do.  I have tested several personal firewalls and I was very disappointed and annoyed at the amount of errors and bugs they generated ... until I came across Zone Alarm Pro.  This program is so good that I have decided to include it in all our security consultant courses.

Why do I need a firewall?  For the same reason you lock your doors and windows.  It is said that for every good idea that is invented there will be 1000 idiots who will try to ruin it.  

PC Security is essential. The Internet has the potential of bringing nations together and stimulating friendships and trade world-wide.  Enter a bunch of fools and clowns who have nothing better to do with their time than to make a nuisance of themselves and spoil everything.  These antisocial pains in the R's are also called "hackers".  Persons who, when caught, should be shown another use of the mouse in an intrusive painful way.

Hackers use their devious antisocial minds to find ways how to get in your computer and cause all sorts of problems.  Some of these are harmless jokes; others have the potential of taking your PC out (and your business).

In other cases, unethical businesses hire hackers to get into your computer and use it as a source of information.  This means, once the hacker has done its job YOUR PC will be sending information at regular intervals without your knowledge to them.  Remember, if it is in your computer hard disk drive, it will be available to anyone who wants it badly.

Chances are you are already carrying some form of spy software in your computer.  If you have ever installed a free software which runs on banners, there is every chance that your computer has been infiltrated.

Do I need to be technically minded to install a personal firewall?  Not with Zone Alarm Pro.  The software is intuitive and intelligent.  Most importantly, it will work beautifully in the background without taking too much of your memory.  It will self-install and configure. It will start protecting your computer from hackers and the most commonly found virus.  It will also self-update every time you log on the Internet-this means no more nasty surprises.

What will it do?  When Zone Alarm Pro senses that some devious creature is trying to gain access to your computer, it will warn you.  It will even record the IP (Internet Provider Number) of the person trying to get in.  It will also warn you if your computer is trying to send information out without your knowledge.  Remember, spy software gets in and then transmits the information out.  When you get the warning, you can decide whether you wish to allow the transmission to continue or to prevent it.   

For example, the first time you run Internet Explorer, Zone Alarm Pro will raise a warning.  Of course you will allow IE to proceed.  You can also ask Zone Alarm Pro to remember that setting so it will not ask you the same question again for that particular software.  

Who is particularly at risk?  Net heads used to think that hackers are only interested in commercial sites like Microsoft. Think again!  Anyone with a computer and a modem is a likely victim.  Also, the longer you stay on line, the more likely it is that you are going to come under attack.  If you have a permanent connection and have not installed Zone Alarm Pro you are a prime target.  Consultants, law enforcement agencies (yes police agencies can get hacked -- ask the FBI).  Anyone who holds large amount of critical information and databases in their computers.
